Cell and gene therapies treating serious diseases
About Ixaka
Ixaka is an integrated cell and gene therapy company that develops treatments for serious diseases by enhancing the body's natural restorative power. The company was founded in 2015 and launched under its new name, Ixaka (formerly Rexgenero Ltd.), in January 2021, following the integration of a French nanoparticle gene therapy business and a shareholder restructuring that secured over £40 million in financing. The company is led by CEO Joe Dupere.
Ixaka's business is centered on two proprietary technology platforms: Concentrated Multi-Cell Therapies (MCT) and Targeted Nanoparticle (TNP) therapeutics. The MCT platform creates autologous, cell-based products, while the TNP platform enables genetic modifications to be performed directly within the patient's body (in vivo), which can be used to create Chimeric Antigen Receptor (CAR) T-cell therapies. These technologies have potential applications across a wide range of diseases, including oncology, cardiovascular conditions like chronic limb-threatening ischemia (CLTI), and genetic disorders.
The company's lead product, REX-001, is an autologous multi-cell therapy for treating CLTI in patients with diabetes. REX-001 involves extracting cells from a patient's bone marrow, enriching them, and re-administering them to the affected limb to promote healing. As of late 2021, REX-001 was in a pivotal Phase III clinical trial (SALAMANDER) across Europe after showing positive interim results. In October 2023, Alaya.bio, a French biotech company, acquired all assets from Ixaka France, including preclinical data, a patent portfolio, and laboratory facilities related to the in vivo CAR T-cell therapy platform.
