Resson
A bioinformatics and predictive analytics company
About Resson
Resson, founded in 2013 by University of New Brunswick graduates Peter Goggin and Rishin Behl, was a data-driven agriculture technology company headquartered in Fredericton, Canada. The founders' initial vision was to leverage drone imagery and artificial intelligence to provide farmers with actionable insights for crop management, such as optimal times for fertilizer application or harvesting. However, due to the high cost of drone data acquisition, the company pivoted to focus on satellite imagery and later developed a dual approach by also incorporating tractor-mounted cameras for more granular, plant-level data collection.
The company's core offering was the Resson Agricultural Management and Analytics System (RAMAS), a platform that integrated large-scale cloud-based data analytics with sensor fusion and robotics. This system analyzed various crop metrics to assess plant health, detect anomalies, and provide predictive analysis for crop management. Resson's technology aimed to help large and small agricultural companies, service providers, and individual growers increase productivity and profitability by enabling data-driven decisions. The platform's features included virtual scouting, pest and disease detection for optimized spraying, and nutrient monitoring. For instance, the system could identify and target specific pests like the Colorado potato beetle in real-time from a moving tractor, thus reducing the use of crop protection materials.
Resson secured a total of $31 million in funding over four rounds, attracting significant strategic investors. Key funding rounds included a $3.02 million Series A in November 2014, an $11 million Series B in June 2016 led by Monsanto Growth Ventures, and a $14 million Series C in May 2018 led by Mahindra & Mahindra. Other notable investors included McCain Foods, Build Ventures, and Rho Canada Partners. The simultaneous development of both satellite and tractor-based imaging technologies proved challenging for the company. In June 2022, Resson sold its satellite imagery intellectual property to McCain Foods to focus its efforts on the tractor-mounted camera technology. Despite this strategic shift, the company was officially dissolved by Corporations Canada in late 2023.
