The company developed a device-agnostic enterprise middleware platform that could gather and analyze data from both legacy and new industrial machinery. This technology enabled services like predictive maintenance, anomaly detection, and the creation of digital twins. One of Relayr's initial notable products was the 'Wunderbar' sensor kit, which offered IoT infrastructure in a compact format. The company's business model focused on shifting clients from capital expenditure (CAPEX) to operational expenditure (OPEX) through 'as-a-service' and pay-per-use models. This approach was supported by a combination of IIoT technology with financial and insurance offerings, which helped to de-risk digital transformation projects for their customers.
Relayr's target market included sectors such as manufacturing, transportation, and heavy industry. The company formed strategic partnerships with companies like FLANDERS to deploy remotely monitored, intelligent solutions for heavy industrial environments. Over its lifetime, Relayr raised a total of approximately $86.2 million in funding over several rounds. A significant turning point came in 2016 when it partnered with Hartford Steam Boiler (HSB), a subsidiary of Munich Re. This collaboration led to HSB acquiring Relayr in October 2018 for a total deal value of around $300 million. As part of its growth, Relayr also made acquisitions, including Neokami in 2017 and Proximetry, to enhance its end-to-end IoT solutions.
However, in the spring of 2025, Munich Re announced a strategic realignment to focus on its core business, which led to the decision to wind down Relayr. The company's official business operations were set to end on July 1, 2025, marking the conclusion of its twelve-year journey from an IoT pioneer to a corporate-owned industrial service provider.
