About Rein4ced

Rein4ced NV operates as a materials engineering and automated manufacturing firm, addressing a critical vulnerability in conventional carbon fiber composites: their tendency toward brittle and catastrophic failure. The company was established in January 2015 as a spin-off from the University of Leuven (KU Leuven) by Michaël Callens, Niels De Greef, and Yannick Meerten, who met while researching composite materials. The founding concept originated from the PhD research of CEO Michaël Callens, who, under the supervision of Professor Ignaas Verpoest, explored the potential of combining steel fibers with carbon to enhance ductility.

The core of Rein4ced's business is a patented hybrid thermoplastic composite material, branded 'Feather', which strategically integrates fine steel fibers into a carbon matrix. This process creates a material that retains the lightweight and stiffness properties of carbon but exhibits metal-like behavior upon impact, resulting in a visible dent rather than a sudden, dangerous break. This significantly increases component durability and safety. The company's business model is centered on acting as an Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM), producing frames directly for established bicycle brands. This approach allows Rein4ced to bring production back to Europe from Asia, offering clients significant logistical advantages and greater supply chain flexibility.

To commercialize its material, Rein4ced developed a proprietary, fully automated production line for thermoplastic composites at its facility in Belgium. This automated process is key, as it ensures consistent quality and allows the company to compete with the labor-intensive manufacturing prevalent in Asia. The initial market focus is on high-performance bicycle frames, particularly for mountain bikes where durability is paramount. The company has already established partnerships, such as with Accell Group for its Ghost brand, to produce frames. While cycling is the primary target, Rein4ced plans to expand its technology platform into the automotive and aerospace industries, where lightweight, damage-tolerant materials are in high demand.
