ReefEdge
Wireless local area network systems for multi-site enterprises to deploy, manage, and secure wireless networks
About ReefEdge
ReefEdge Networks emerged in 2000 as a specialized entity in the wireless local area network (WLAN) security sector. The firm was established by Dr. Ajei Gopal, a technologist with a background at IBM Research and Bell Communications Research and a Ph.D. in Computer Science from Cornell University. His expertise in distributed systems directly informed the company's direction, aiming to resolve the complex security and management challenges associated with enterprise wireless adoption.
The company's business was centered on providing hardware and software for centrally securing and managing corporate WLANs. Its primary product line, the ReefEdge Connect System, featured security gateways and WLAN switches. These devices, known as ReefSwitches, operated at Layer 2 and Layer 7, integrating with an enterprise's existing authentication infrastructure, such as RADIUS and Active Directory, to enforce user- and group-specific access policies. This approach allowed IT managers to maintain a single, synchronized user database while controlling access and quality of service on the wireless network. The system was designed to be vendor-neutral, supporting both 802.11a/b and Bluetooth devices.
ReefEdge's revenue model was based on the sale of these hardware systems to enterprises and service providers. A key milestone was the 2002 launch of the ReefEdge Service Provider Solution (SPS), which enabled providers to create and manage broadband wireless services that spanned both licensed and unlicensed spectrums. This addressed the growing need for persistent mobile sessions for corporate users moving between different network environments. The company secured Series A funding from investors including Bessemer Venture Partners and Columbia Capital shortly after its inception.
Following its establishment, ReefEdge operated in a competitive market. The company was ultimately acquired by Symantec Corporation in the 2003-2004 timeframe, a move that integrated its WLAN security and management capabilities into the portfolio of the cybersecurity giant. This event marked the next chapter for the founder, Dr. Gopal, who subsequently joined Symantec as its Chief Technology Officer, leveraging his deep experience from building ReefEdge.
