Delivers productivity solutions to help companies in workforce, inventory and transportation MoreLess
In 1975, two colleagues from Miller Brewing Co.'s information systems department, Jim McHugh and Doug Freeman, decided to launch their own software and consulting firm, McHugh Freeman & Associates. The company initially focused on IT consulting but soon leveraged its expertise to build one of the first comprehensive warehouse management systems (WMS). This software formed the core of a business that would become an essential, if often unseen, player in the global supply chain. Throughout the 80s and 90s, the company, which eventually became RedPrairie Corporation in 2002, grew by focusing on software that helps companies manage the complex logistics of their supply chains. Their products handled warehouse, transportation, and workforce management for major retailers, manufacturers, and distributors. By the early 2000s, less than a quarter of its revenue came from its original WMS, as it had expanded into a broader suite of supply chain execution tools. A pivotal moment arrived in November 2012, when RedPrairie announced a $1.9 billion merger with a major competitor, JDA Software. The move was strategic, combining RedPrairie's strength in logistics and warehouse execution with JDA's expertise in supply chain planning and merchandising. The combined entity, which took the JDA name, became a billion-dollar software giant with the power to manage a product's entire journey from raw material to the consumer's hands. The story evolved again when JDA acquired AI firm Blue Yonder in 2018 and rebranded the entire company as Blue Yonder in 2020, which was later acquired by Panasonic.
