About Raptr

Raptr, Inc. was a social networking company for video game players, founded in 2007 by professional gamer Dennis "Thresh" Fong and Patrick Li. Fong, recognized by Guinness World Records as the first professional gamer, leveraged his deep understanding of the gaming community to address its needs. His entrepreneurial journey began after retiring from professional gaming, co-founding successful ventures like Xfire, an instant messaging service for gamers which was sold to Viacom for $102 million.

The company developed a downloadable client for Windows that initially served as a social platform and instant messenger, integrating services like Xbox Live, PlayStation Network, Steam, and various chat protocols. Its core function was to allow gamers to track gameplay time and achievements, connect with friends, and share their gaming activity on platforms like Twitter and Facebook. The business model was primarily ad-supported, aiming to provide relevant content to its user base. A key feature introduced later was the Raptr Rewards program, where users earned points for playing and optimizing games, which could be exchanged for in-game items and hardware discounts.

A significant milestone for Raptr was a strategic partnership with AMD in 2013, which led to the creation of the "Gaming Evolved App." This collaboration focused on optimizing PC game settings for users with AMD graphics cards, aiming to simplify the PC gaming experience to be more like consoles. This pivot to PC optimization in 2014 spurred rapid user growth, with the platform reaching 22 million registered users. Raptr also ventured into video content, launching a gameplay video clip sharing service called Plays.tv in 2015, which later spun off into an independent company. Over its lifespan, Raptr raised a total of $41 million in funding from investors including Accel Partners, Founders Fund, DAG Ventures, Tenaya Capital, and AMD.

Despite its initial success and substantial user base, Raptr faced increasing competition as hardware manufacturers like AMD and Nvidia developed their own optimization tools. In October 2016, AMD discontinued the Gaming Evolved App, ending their collaboration. This event marked a turning point for the company. On September 30, 2017, Raptr officially shut down its services, with Fong acknowledging that an independent optimization platform was no longer necessary in the changed market landscape.
