The company was founded in 1999 by Dr. Ramesh Kancharla, who serves as the Chairman and Managing Director, alongside Dr. Dinesh Kumar Chirla, a neonatal surgeon. Dr. Kancharla, a pediatric gastroenterologist, gained extensive experience in the UK at institutions like Great Ormond Street Children's Hospital before returning to India. This experience was foundational to establishing Rainbow, with the goal of bringing a multi-disciplinary, consultant-led institutional model, similar to the UK's NHS, to India.

The journey began with a single 50-bed pediatric hospital in Banjara Hills, Hyderabad, on November 14, 1999. This first facility quickly established a reputation for its 24-hour consultant-led intensive care and its ability to manage very sick children, including providing a transport facility to bring in patients from surrounding districts. A significant milestone was the expansion into perinatal services in 2007 with the launch of "BirthRight by Rainbow Hospitals," a brand focused on obstetrics, gynecology, and fetal medicine, providing comprehensive care for mothers and newborns, especially in high-risk pregnancies. This integration created synergies, as the benefits of birthing within a children's hospital became evident. The company went public with an Initial Public Offering (IPO) in April 2022, listing on the BSE and NSE stock exchanges on May 10, 2022.

Rainbow's business model is centered on a hub-and-spoke network, where large, comprehensive 'hub' hospitals with tertiary and quaternary care capabilities support smaller 'spoke' facilities that provide secondary care and outpatient services. This asset-light model is designed for operational efficiency and faster expansion. Revenue is primarily generated from patient care services, including hospital services (inpatient and outpatient care), diagnostics, and consultations. In fiscal year 2022, hospital services accounted for approximately 74% of total revenue, with diagnostics contributing around 15% and outpatient services about 11%. The company operates a network of 19 hospitals and multiple clinics across cities like Hyderabad, Bangalore, Delhi, Chennai, Vijayawada, and Visakhapatnam.

The hospital chain offers a wide array of specialized services. For children, this includes neonatal and pediatric intensive care, pediatric multi-specialty services, and quaternary care like multi-organ transplants. Key pediatric departments cover neurology, gastroenterology, oncology, orthopedics, and cardiology, including the dedicated Rainbow Children's Heart Institute established in 2018. The women's care services under the 'BirthRight' brand encompass everything from fertility treatments and normal or complex obstetric care to perinatal genetics and multi-disciplinary fetal medicine. A key operational distinction is its doctor engagement model, which relies on full-time doctors who do not practice elsewhere, ensuring consistent, round-the-clock care.
