In 1978, Questel began not as a startup, but as a subsidiary of France Télécom, now known as Orange S.A.. With its technical operations based in Sophia Antipolis, the company was established to provide intellectual property information services, initially focusing on French databases and trademarks. A key figure in its early development was Pierre Buffet. A pivotal moment came in 2001 when Questel spun off from France Télécom, a move that set it on a new course focused squarely on the global IP market. This independence unlocked a new chapter of growth. The company provides a suite of software and services that manage the entire intellectual property lifecycle, from patent searches and analysis to international filings and renewals. The story then becomes one of strategic expansion, heavily fueled by private equity. In July 2018, IK Investment Partners acquired a stake, signaling a new phase of ambition. This was followed in December 2020 by a major transaction where Eurazeo Capital and IK Partners acquired 100% of the company, valuing it at €915 million. This private equity backing enabled an aggressive acquisition strategy, with Questel buying numerous companies to build a one-stop-shop for IP services. Today, Questel is a privately held company with major stakeholders including Eurazeo, IK Partners, and Paragon Partners, which joined in 2021.
