About Qtera

In the dot-com boom of the late 90s, the race was on to build a faster internet. In 1998, a team of founders including Fahri Diner, Rick Aversano, Bob Ade, Ian Haxell, and Xiang-Dong Cao started Qtera in Boca Raton, Florida. Their goal was to solve a massive problem in fiber optics: how to send data over incredibly long distances without it degrading. At the time, optical signals needed to be regenerated every 400 miles or so, a costly bottleneck. Qtera developed groundbreaking technology for ultra-long-reach optical networking. Their system could transmit signals up to 4,000 kilometers (nearly 2,500 miles) without regeneration, a huge leap forward. This caught the attention of the telecom giants. In a highly competitive environment with rivals like Cisco and Lucent, Canadian telecom equipment maker Nortel Networks saw a huge strategic advantage in Qtera's tech. In a stunning move for a pre-revenue startup, Nortel announced its acquisition of Qtera in December 1999 for up to $3.25 billion in stock. The deal, finalized in early 2000, was a massive validation of the team's vision and technology. Nortel acquired all 170 of Qtera's employees, aiming to integrate their first-mover technology to dominate the high-speed optical market. It was a quintessential story of the era: a small, focused startup with a game-changing idea getting snapped up for billions before it had sold a single product.
