About Qingpingguo
Qingpingguo, formally Shanghai Kangkanghui Technology Co., Ltd., was a digital health company that operated in the Chinese internet medical sector. Founded in August 2013 by Xu Jia, a Harvard Business School graduate, the company aimed to improve doctor-patient relationships in China. Xu Jia, also known as Xu Jiazi, was motivated by her experience with the U.S. healthcare system and sought to build trust between doctors and patients by establishing a better communication framework.
The company launched its sole product, the Qingpingguo Health app, in November 2013. The platform was designed around a "acquaintance-based doctor-patient" model, focusing on post-diagnosis communication. It allowed patients to connect with doctors they had already seen in person for follow-up care. The application had two versions: 'Qingpingguo Doctor' for medical professionals and 'Qingpingguo Health' for the general public. Its core service was providing a channel for doctors and patients to communicate without exchanging personal contact information, such as phone numbers or private WeChat accounts. The platform facilitated online text and phone consultations, appointment scheduling for follow-ups, and prescription services.
Qingpingguo attracted significant investor interest early on. It secured several million RMB in an angel round from Wang Gang, an early investor in Didi Daxi. This was followed by a $5 million Series A round in August 2014 from GSR Ventures and a $10 million Series B round in February 2016, led by DT Capital with GSR Ventures also participating. The company announced a Series B+ round in November 2017, although the amount and investors were not disclosed. Despite its initial success and a user base of 2 million patients and 100,000 doctors, Qingpingguo struggled with monetization. Attempts to generate revenue through a virtual gift system, premium service cards, and an e-commerce platform focusing on post-operative care products did not create a sustainable business model. The company officially ceased operations on June 30, 2019, citing the difficulty in achieving a breakthrough in the internet medical industry and the overall challenge of profitability in the sector.
