About Qik

Qik, Inc. was a mobile video streaming service that allowed users to broadcast live video from their cell phones to the internet. The company was founded in a garage in 2006 by Ramu Sunkara, Bhaskar Roy, and Nikolay Abkairov, all of whom had previously worked at Oracle. Sunkara, leveraging his experience from Oracle and Digital Equipment Corporation, envisioned and developed the world's first cloud-assisted live streaming technology for mobile phones, bootstrapping the company for its first year. The service launched its alpha version in December 2007 and entered public beta in July 2008.

The platform enabled users to record and share live or pre-recorded videos directly from their mobile devices. These videos could be shared across numerous social networks and services, including Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube, or embedded on websites. Qik offered a two-way video conferencing feature and its core value proposition was the ability to instantly capture and share life moments. The business model focused on user growth, making the app available on over 200 different phones across various operating systems like Android, iOS, and Symbian, often through pre-loading agreements with manufacturers and carriers. By the end of 2010, the company had grown its user base from 600,000 to over 5 million.

This rapid growth attracted significant attention and investment. In April 2008, Qik secured $3 million in Series B funding from notable investors including Marc Benioff. Later that year, Netscape veterans Marc Andreessen and Ben Horowitz also invested an undisclosed amount and joined as board advisers. The company's trajectory culminated in its acquisition by Skype in January 2011 for approximately $150 million. Following the acquisition, the original Qik service was eventually shut down on April 30, 2014, and some of its features were integrated into a new service called Skype Qik, which was later retired in 2016 by Microsoft, who had acquired Skype.
