About QD Laser

QD Laser, Inc. develops, manufactures, and sells semiconductor laser technologies, including quantum dot lasers and retinal scanning laser eyewear. Founded in April 2006 as a spin-off from Fujitsu Laboratories and backed by Mitsui & Co., Ltd., the company was established to commercialize quantum dot laser technology. This technology was the result of joint research between Fujitsu and the University of Tokyo. The company's founder, Mitsuru Sugawara, previously a researcher at Fujitsu Laboratories, now serves as an advisor.

The company operates through two main segments: the Laser Device Business and the Laser Eyewear Business. In its laser device segment, QD Laser produces a range of high-performance semiconductor lasers and epitaxial wafers. Its core offering, the quantum dot laser, provides stable performance in high-temperature environments and is resistant to external light reflection, making it suitable for data centers, advanced medical care, and silicon photonics. Other products include Distributed Feedback (DFB) lasers for applications like micromachining and LiDAR, and high-power Fabry-Perot lasers for sensor applications. The company utilizes a semi-fabless business model, handling proprietary crystal growth technology in-house while outsourcing parts of the manufacturing process.

The Laser Eyewear business features the RETISSA brand of eyewear, which uses a unique retinal projection technology. This technology projects images directly onto the retina using a low-power laser, a system developed to assist with visual support and for use in consumer information terminals. These products are sold through distributors, including eyewear retailers and ophthalmic equipment distributors, and e-commerce sites. Listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange Growth Market under the securities code 6613, the company is headquartered in Kawasaki, Japan.
