About Puro earth

Puro.earth operates as a B2B marketplace, standard, and registry exclusively focused on engineered and durable carbon dioxide removal. Founded in 2018 by Antti Vihavainen, Marianne Tikkanen, and Elba Horta, the Finland-based company was established to create a missing business incentive for carbon removal. Vihavainen, with a background in international business and a long-standing interest in market-based environmental solutions, pitched the initial idea to the clean energy company Fortum. He collaborated with Tikkanen, then an Innovation Manager at Fortum with a background in engineering and IT, to develop the business model. They recognized that to scale carbon removal, they first needed to create a verifiable, tradable asset.

The company's core offering is the CO2 Removal Certificate (CORC), a digital asset representing one metric ton of CO2 that has been physically removed from the atmosphere and stored durably for a minimum of 100 years. This sets CORCs apart from traditional carbon offsets, which often focus on emission avoidance rather than removal. Puro.earth has established the Puro Standard, a framework of science-based methodologies for quantifying and verifying carbon removal across various technologies. These methodologies include biochar, geologically stored carbon (such as Direct Air Capture and Storage or BECCS), carbonated materials, and terrestrial biomass storage. Each project undergoes a rigorous, independent, third-party verification process before CORCs can be issued on the public Puro Registry, ensuring transparency and preventing double-counting.

Puro.earth's business model is centered on connecting two main groups: suppliers of carbon removal technologies and corporate clients seeking to neutralize their residual emissions. Suppliers gain a new revenue stream by selling CORCs, which helps finance their operations and expansion. Corporate buyers, including major companies like Microsoft and Shopify, purchase CORCs to meet their net-zero targets. Revenue is generated through a transparent fee structure, which includes an annual fee for platform access and volume-based pricing for CORC issuance, decoupling the cost from the credit's market value. A significant milestone occurred in June 2021 when Nasdaq acquired a majority stake in the company, a move intended to scale the marketplace and enhance its credibility. Fortum remains a minority shareholder. Following this, Puro.earth secured €11 million ($12.8 million) in a Series B funding round in September 2025, led by Nasdaq, to further develop its infrastructure. The company has demonstrated substantial growth, surpassing one million CORCs issued by the first quarter of 2025, having doubled the number of issuances in just one year.
