About PureSec

PureSec, established in Tel Aviv in 2016, carved a niche in the cybersecurity landscape by focusing on the then-nascent field of serverless architecture security. The company was founded by a team of security veterans: Shaked Zin, who served as CEO, Ory Segal as CTO, and Avi Shulman as VP of R&D. Recognizing the unique security challenges posed by Function-as-a-Service (FaaS) environments, where traditional security tools are ineffective, they developed a platform to protect serverless applications.

PureSec's core offering was its Serverless Security Runtime Environment (SSRE), a platform designed to provide end-to-end protection for applications built on services like AWS Lambda, Azure Functions, and Google Cloud Functions. The technology operated by giving developers and security teams deep visibility into function behavior and enforcing security policies automatically. Its features included vulnerability management, runtime threat protection against application-layer attacks like SQL injections, and behavioral analysis to detect and block malicious activity in real-time. The platform was designed to be multi-cloud, allowing clients to apply consistent security measures across different serverless vendors.

The company's journey included a seed funding round of $3 million in May 2017 and a Series A round of $7 million in October 2018. This culminated in its acquisition by Palo Alto Networks in May 2019 for an estimated $60-70 million. The acquisition was a strategic move by Palo Alto Networks to integrate PureSec's serverless security capabilities into its comprehensive Prisma cloud security suite, extending its protection to modern application development lifecycles. The entire PureSec team, including the co-founders, joined Palo Alto Networks following the transaction.
