Pure Digital Technologies
Imaging solutions for the mass market, including the flip video series of digital camcorders
About Pure Digital Technologies
Pure Digital Technologies, founded in 2001 by Jonathan Kaplan, was a consumer electronics company that gained widespread recognition for creating the Flip Video camcorder. Kaplan, a serial entrepreneur with a background that includes roles at Condé Nast and as CEO of Sega.com, aimed to make video capture and sharing accessible to the mass market. The company's journey began with single-use digital cameras sold through retailers like CVS, which evolved from a partnership to create a one-time-use digital camcorder in 2005.
This early product set the stage for the company's pivotal shift to reusable devices. In May 2006, Pure Digital launched the "Point & Shoot Video Camcorder," which was rebranded as the "Flip Video" in 2007. The business model was straightforward: selling affordable, easy-to-use hardware to everyday consumers. The Flip Video's key selling point was its simplicity, featuring minimal buttons, a pocket-sized design, and a signature flip-out USB arm that allowed for easy connection to a computer. This design eliminated the need for cables and complex software, simplifying the process of transferring and uploading videos to platforms like YouTube.
The product line expanded to include models like the Flip Ultra and the high-definition Flip Mino HD, which became the best-selling camcorder in the U.S., capturing a significant share of the market. By 2009, Pure Digital had sold over two million units. The company's success culminated in its acquisition by Cisco Systems in March 2009 for approximately $590 million in stock. Following the acquisition, Kaplan became the general manager of Cisco's consumer business division. However, the rise of smartphones with integrated high-quality video recording capabilities quickly made single-purpose devices like the Flip redundant, and Cisco discontinued the product line in April 2011.
