About PunchTab
PunchTab operated as a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) provider with a focus on omni-channel consumer management and engagement. The company was established in 2011 by co-founders Ranjith Kumaran and Mehdi Ait Oufkir and was headquartered in Palo Alto, California. Kumaran, who previously co-founded the file-sharing service YouSendIt (later Hightail), brought his experience in building scalable online platforms to this new venture. His journey from YouSendIt, a company that grew to serve over 45 million people, was driven by a preference for the challenges of early-stage startups. Ait Oufkir, who was an early member of YouSendIt.com, also had a background in scaling companies to millions of users. The partnership was Kumaran's second founding team, created with lessons learned from his first company.

The firm's core business was a platform that enabled brands, particularly in the consumer packaged goods (CPG) and retail sectors, to create and manage loyalty and engagement programs. Clients, which included names like The Yankee Candle Company, Arby's, and Nestle, used PunchTab's cloud-based tools to foster direct relationships with their customers. The platform was designed to capture a comprehensive view of consumer behavior by connecting online, mobile, and in-store activities. It offered both a self-service, easy-to-implement product and the option for fully customizable, white-labeled programs. The business model was initially freemium, providing basic loyalty mechanics for free while charging fees for advanced features like customization, data analytics, and CRM functionalities. The service incentivized actions such as social media engagement, blog reading, and in-store purchases, allowing consumers to earn points redeemable for rewards.
PunchTab secured a total of $11.5 million in funding over three rounds from investors including Mohr Davidow Ventures and Crunch Fund. The company's trajectory culminated in a strategic acquisition by WalmartLabs in September 2015. The acquisition was an acqui-hire, with the primary goal of integrating PunchTab's technology and talent to enhance the customer relationship management (CRM) capabilities for Walmart's brands, starting with Sam's Club. As part of the deal, Mehdi Ait Oufkir and a team of five engineers joined the customer acquisition and retention team at @WalmartLabs to apply their platform to personalize offers across in-store, mobile, and online channels.
