PSemi
A Murata company driving semiconductor integration
About PSemi
In 1990, a trio of researchers, Dr. Ron Reedy, Dr. Mark Burgener, and Rory Moore, launched a company called Peregrine Semiconductor. Their goal was to commercialize a technology the industry considered highly challenging: radio frequency (RF) silicon-on-insulator (SOI). This technology, which they branded as UltraCMOS, aimed to integrate multiple RF, analog, and digital functions onto a single chip, a significant step forward in semiconductor design. The company’s early years focused on developing this proprietary technology, securing a key agreement in 1991 with the Naval Ocean Systems Center to help commercialize it. Peregrine delivered its first order of 100 chips in 1995 and by 2004, had entered the competitive mobile handset market. A pivotal moment in the company's journey came in August 2012, when Peregrine Semiconductor went public on the NASDAQ, raising $77 million in its IPO. This event validated their long-term bet on SOI technology. Just two years later, in December 2014, the next major chapter unfolded: Japanese electronics giant Murata Manufacturing acquired the company for approximately $465 million. Operating as a subsidiary of Murata, the company continued to innovate. In January 2018, Peregrine Semiconductor rebranded to pSemi, marking a new phase of growth and an expanded mission to serve as Murata's hub for semiconductor activities. Today, pSemi's chips are integral components in millions of devices worldwide, from smartphones to 5G base stations.
