ProteoTech
Therapeutics and diagnostics for amyloid diseases
About ProteoTech
ProteoTech, Inc. was a privately held drug development company established in 1996 and headquartered in Kirkland, Washington. The firm, which also operated under the name Proteoglycan Technologies, Inc., concentrated its research and development efforts on creating therapeutics and diagnostics for amyloid diseases, which are characterized by misfolded proteins. The company’s primary mission was to inhibit the formation and accumulation of amyloid protein aggregates found in the brains of patients with Alzheimer's disease, as well as targeting similar protein-related issues in Parkinson's disease, type 2 diabetes, and systemic amyloidosis.
The company's business strategy was centered on its proprietary technology, secured through a worldwide exclusive license from the University of Washington. This allowed ProteoTech to develop three classes of compounds designed to disrupt the amyloid fibril process. Revenue generation was based on a hybrid model common in the biotechnology sector, involving technology partnering and asset out-licensing. A key example of this was the co-development agreement with Tianjin-based Tasly Pharmaceutical for its small-molecule therapeutic, Exebryl-1, aimed at treating Alzheimer's disease. Under this agreement, ProteoTech received upfront payments and research funding, retaining rights for the U.S. and other international markets while Tasly acquired rights for China.
ProteoTech developed a pipeline of therapeutic candidates. This included Systebryl™ for AL amyloidosis, Synuclere™ for Parkinson's disease, and PeptiClere™ for Alzheimer's disease, all of which were in late-stage pre-clinical development. The company also explored natural compounds, identifying an extract from the plant *Uncaria tomentosa* (cat's claw) as a potent inhibitor of both beta-amyloid plaques and tau protein tangles, key factors in Alzheimer's progression. While the company secured significant funding and advanced several compounds, multiple sources indicated that the firm ceased operations around 2016.
