About ProStor Systems

ProStor Systems, founded in May 2004, was a data storage company that developed and manufactured removable disk storage systems targeting small and midsized enterprises. The company was led by CEO and President Steve Georgis, a data storage industry veteran with over 28 years of experience at firms like Exabyte and StorageTek. ProStor was backed by venture capital firms including New Enterprise Associates, Boulder Ventures, and Western Technology Investment.

The company’s core innovation was the RDX (Removable Disk Exchange) technology, designed as a modern alternative to traditional tape backup systems. RDX technology combined the portability and long archival life of tape with the speed, random-access performance, and reliability of disk-based storage. The product consisted of a rugged, shock-proof cartridge containing a 2.5-inch hard disk drive, and a corresponding docking station. This setup was engineered to provide a durable and easy-to-use solution for backup, disaster recovery, and data archiving. The business model involved both direct product sales and licensing the RDX technology to other manufacturers and OEMs, with notable partners including Dell, HP, IBM, and Tandberg Data.

In addition to the RDX hardware, ProStor developed the InfiniVault, a multi-tiered storage system that integrated the RDX technology with information management software. This system allowed clients to automate data retention policies, managing data across online, nearline, and offline tiers based on access frequency and retention requirements. After establishing RDX as an industry standard, ProStor Systems underwent a strategic shift. In May 2011, the company sold its RDX business, including intellectual property and key engineering staff, to Tandberg Data to focus exclusively on the InfiniVault product line. Subsequently, in August 2011, ProStor's InfiniVault assets were acquired by Imation, marking the end of the company's operations as it was broken up and sold.
