Propzy
Full-stack real estate platform that originates and facilitates property sale and leasing transactions in vietnam
About Propzy
Propzy was a Vietnamese proptech company established in 2015 by John Le, a Vietnamese American entrepreneur with a background in finance and technology. Le was inspired to create the platform after experiencing difficulties himself while trying to rent and buy property in Vietnam. His previous ventures included successful US-based startups like LoanTrader and Portellus, and he co-founded TransUnion Vietnam, the country's first international credit bureau.
The company aimed to streamline and standardize real estate transactions in Vietnam's fragmented market by creating a comprehensive, end-to-end platform. Propzy operated on a hybrid online-to-offline model, combining a digital marketplace with a network of physical transaction centers, which numbered over 30 at its peak. This approach provided both online listings and in-person support for customers. The business model involved taking a commission, reportedly 1% from each transaction, and also offered ancillary services such as legal support, mortgage lending solutions, and property management.
Propzy served both property buyers and sellers in Vietnam, focusing primarily on the secondary residential market in Ho Chi Minh City. The platform's main offering was a verified database of properties, enabling users to connect directly and transact in a more secure environment. The company experienced rapid growth, expanding to 1,200 employees and 80,000 customers by 2020. It was one of Vietnam's most well-funded proptech startups, having raised over $33 million from investors including Gaw Capital Partners and SoftBank Ventures Asia.
Despite its initial success, the company faced significant challenges. In September 2021, it laid off 50% of its staff as part of a restructuring effort. Ultimately, Propzy ceased all operations in September 2022. The founder cited significant losses incurred during the COVID-19 pandemic, prolonged lockdowns in Vietnam, global financial instability, and the inability to secure further funding as the primary reasons for the shutdown.
