Proneuron Biotechnologies
Spinal cord injury treatments, researches cures for paralysis, and neurological therapies
About Proneuron Biotechnologies
Proneuron Biotechnologies Inc. was a biopharmaceutical firm established in 1996, focusing on therapies for central nervous system (CNS) disorders, with a primary emphasis on spinal cord injuries. The company's scientific foundation was built upon the neuroimmunology research of Professor Michal Schwartz from the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel. Co-founder Dale S. Miller, an individual with a background in law and merchant banking, served as the Executive Chairman, guiding the company's corporate and financial strategy. Proneuron's business model was characteristic of a clinical-stage biotechnology company, relying on equity financing and grants to fund its research and development activities. The company successfully raised approximately $37.1 million through various funding rounds, including investments from venture capital firms like Giza Venture Capital and grants from foundations such as The Michael J. Fox Foundation.
The company's lead therapeutic candidate was ProCord, a cell-based therapy for acute spinal cord injury. This treatment involved isolating macrophages, a type of white blood cell, from a patient's own blood, activating them through a proprietary process, and then injecting them directly into the site of the spinal cord injury. The rationale behind this approach was based on the discovery that these activated macrophages could help modulate the inflammatory response and promote a healing process that is otherwise ineffective in the CNS. ProCord was granted Orphan Drug status by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in September 2004 and progressed to international, multi-center Phase II clinical trials in the United States and Israel. Beyond ProCord, Proneuron was also exploring other treatments, including PN277 for other neurological conditions and a collaboration with Teva Pharmaceutical Industries on Cop-1 for neurodegenerative diseases like glaucoma. Despite its efforts and reaching advanced clinical stages, Proneuron Biotechnologies ceased operations around October 2016.
