ProfitBricks entered a market dominated by global players, but it carved out a niche by offering a flexible, high-performance cloud infrastructure. Their key differentiator was a user-friendly, graphical interface that allowed customers to design and manage their virtual data centers with ease. A significant chapter in the ProfitBricks story was written in 2017 when the company was acquired by United Internet AG, the parent company of 1&1. This wasn't just an exit; it was a homecoming. United Internet had been a shareholder since ProfitBricks' inception and the full acquisition was a strategic move to strengthen its enterprise cloud offerings. Following the acquisition, ProfitBricks and 1&1's web hosting business merged in 2018 to form the new brand IONOS, with Achim Weiss taking the helm as CEO to lead the combined entity.
