About Professional Triathletes Organisation

The Professional Triathletes Organisation (PTO) is a London-based entity dedicated to promoting the sport of non-drafting professional triathlon on a global scale. Its structure is a hybrid, functioning as both a not-for-profit organization representing athletes and a commercial enterprise. The commercial ventures, including its signature events, are operated under a separate entity in which the athletes hold a 50% ownership stake, with the remaining 50% held by investors.

The concept for the organization originated as the Professional Triathletes Union (PTU) in 2014, initiated by a group of elite athletes including Ironman World Champions Mirinda Carfrae and Sebastian Kienle. The transition to the PTO in 2016 was guided by Charles Adamo, who served as Executive Chairman until 2022 and was instrumental in shaping its economic model. Adamo, who had a background in hotel development, was motivated to help after learning about the financial struggles of top-tier athletes. In 2020, the organization secured a pivotal partnership with Crankstart Investments, the investment foundation of venture capitalist Sir Michael Moritz, which provided the financial backing to launch its major events and athlete bonus programs. The current Executive Chairman is Chris Kermode, who previously served as the head of the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) and brings experience in elevating professional sports.

The PTO's business model is designed to be media-rights agnostic, focusing on three main revenue streams: sponsorship, government hosting fees, and mass participation events. The organization generates income through its global racing series, the T100 Triathlon World Tour, which features both professional and amateur races. This tour, recognized by World Triathlon as the official World Championship Tour for long-distance triathlon, was launched in 2024 as a rebrand of the previous PTO Tour. The T100 series consists of eight races where contracted professional triathletes compete over a 100km distance (2km swim, 80km bike, 18km run) for substantial prize money, with a total compensation of over $7 million distributed through contracts, event purses, and a year-end bonus pool. A key principle of the PTO is gender parity, with equal prize money for male and female athletes. The organization has also established a maternity leave policy, allowing female athletes to retain an income and their world ranking during and after pregnancy. A significant portion of the audience engagement strategy revolves around high-quality media broadcasts and behind-the-scenes content to build athlete narratives, similar to the model used in professional tennis and Formula 1.

Central to the PTO's ecosystem is its World Ranking System, which was overhauled in 2023 by an athlete committee to be more transparent and objective. The system scores athletes based on their finishing position, the strength of the field, and their race time at tiered events (Diamond, Platinum, Gold, Silver, Bronze). These rankings determine automatic qualification spots for major events and the distribution of the annual bonus program. The PTO Athlete Board, which includes prominent figures like two-time Olympic champion Alistair Brownlee and American triathlete Timothy O'Donnell, plays an advisory role, representing the interests of professional triathletes.
