Probi AB operates as a specialized biotechnology firm concentrating on the research, development, and manufacturing of probiotic solutions. The company’s origins trace back to a research project at Lund University, Sweden, in the mid-1980s, which aimed to explore the therapeutic benefits of specific probiotics for critically ill patients. This foundational research led to the company's official establishment in 1991.

The business model is twofold, encompassing both Business-to-Business (B2B) and Business-to-Consumer (B2C) segments. Probi primarily functions as a B2B entity, providing clinically documented probiotic strains and expertise to partners in the pharmaceutical, health, and food industries. These partners then incorporate Probi's biotics into their own branded supplements and functional foods. A significant milestone in the company's history was the 2016 acquisition of Nutraceutix, a US-based company, which transformed Probi into a vertically integrated organization with capabilities spanning the entire value chain from R&D and fermentation to final production and marketing. Another pivotal development occurred in early 2025 when Probi became part of Symrise AG, a major global supplier of fragrances, flavors, and nutrition solutions, following an acquisition that led to its delisting from Nasdaq Stockholm. Probi's product portfolio is built on a foundation of extensive scientific research, with over 400 granted patents and applications. Its offerings are structured around nine key health areas, including digestive health, immune support, mental wellness, bone health, and iron absorption. Flagship concepts include Probi Digestis®, Probi Defendum®, Probi FerroSorb®, and Probi® Osteo. A key strain, Lactiplantibacillus plantarum 299v (LP299V®), is one of the most clinically studied in the world and formed the basis for ProViva, the company's first commercial product launched in 1994. The company continues to innovate, with recent developments including a focus on the gut-brain axis with strains like HEAL9 for cognitive and mental wellness, and the 2024 launch of Metabolic Health by Probi®, a concept targeting markers of metabolic syndrome.
