Prioria Robotics

Prioria Robotics, Inc. was a Gainesville, Florida-based company established in 2003 by University of Florida graduates Bryan da Frota, who served as CEO, and Jason Grzywna, the Vice President of Engineering. The firm initially concentrated on embedded sensor processing products but pivoted to the design and manufacture of unmanned aircraft systems (UAS).

The company's primary market consisted of military, civil, and commercial clients requiring aerial surveillance and reconnaissance capabilities. Revenue was generated through the sale of their UAS platforms, engineering services for custom modifications, and related technologies. A significant milestone was achieved in November 2013 when Prioria secured a $4.5 million contract to supply the U.S. Army with 36 of its flagship Maveric UAS and 12 ground control stations. The company also received state and local incentives and completed a $5.5 million Series C funding round in 2012 to fuel its growth.

Prioria’s key product was the Maveric, a small, single-person-portable UAS made of composite carbon fiber. Marketed for its immediate launch capability without assembly, the Maveric featured a unique bendable wing technology licensed from the University of Florida. This design allowed the 2-pound, 28-inch wingspan drone to be hand-launched directly from its storage tube. The Maveric was equipped for fully autonomous waypoint navigation or manual flight and included sensors for day, night, and obscured environmental conditions. Another offering was the Merlin embedded processing platform, which extended the reconnaissance and surveillance capabilities of the UAS. The company later developed larger fixed-wing models like the Leviathan and the Hex Rotor multi-rotor UAS for public safety and commercial use.

Despite its early successes, Prioria faced legal challenges. In 2015, a vendor alleged the company misrepresented the Maveric's specifications. A subsequent lawsuit for breach of contract resulted in a $1.5 million judgment against Prioria in December 2017. Following the court's decision, the company's assets were seized in January 2018, leading Prioria to file for bankruptcy in February 2018 with over $5.5 million in debt.
