Prevayl
Licensable IP for intelligent, data-capturing apparel
About Prevayl
Prevayl is a deep-tech innovation hub focused on licensing its extensive intellectual property portfolio for wearable technology. Founded in Manchester, UK, in 2019 by former personal trainer Adam Crofts and serial entrepreneur David Newns, the company initially set out to disrupt the smart clothing market by creating its own line of apparel. Crofts, with a background in sports science and business development, was frustrated by the inaccuracies of existing wearables and envisioned a future where data was seamlessly captured through clothing. Newns, an experienced entrepreneur with two previous company exits and a background as a young FTSE executive, provided the business and investment acumen.
The company's original model involved developing and selling a direct-to-consumer (D2C) line of 'SmartWear'—premium sportswear with integrated sensors to provide clinical-grade biometric data. The technology featured apparel with knitted electrodes and a discreet, lightweight sensor that captured over 1,000 data points per second, including comprehensive ECG data, breathing patterns, and movement. This data was then processed by a companion app to offer users actionable insights into their health and performance. In June 2021, Prevayl secured £7.5 million ($10.6M) in a seed funding round led by Stonebridge to facilitate its product launch and expansion.
However, in late 2024, the company pivoted its business model. Acknowledging the challenges of launching a consumer product in a congested market, Prevayl shifted its focus from selling apparel to monetizing its technology through IP licensing. The company, operating as Prevayl Innovations, now enables other companies in sectors like fitness, healthcare, and industrial monitoring to use its portfolio of nearly 200 patents to develop their own smart wearable products. This move positions Prevayl as a technology enabler, leveraging its deep R&D in areas like textile sensing, body area networks, and on-device machine learning.
