Poundworld Retail Ltd operates retail stores across the United Kingdom
About Poundworld
The story of Poundworld begins in 1974 with a father-son duo, Chris Edwards Sr. and Chris Edwards Jr., on a Wakefield market stall. Initially a multi-priced store called "Bargain Centre," they pivoted to a single-price model in 1997, eventually rebranding to Poundworld in 2003. The business saw rapid expansion, particularly during the 2008 financial crisis. A significant turning point came in 2015 when the Edwards family sold a majority stake to private equity firm TPG Capital for £150 million, a move intended to fuel further growth. Despite the injection of capital and ambitious expansion plans, the company faced significant headwinds. The weakening of the pound made sourcing products for £1 increasingly difficult. Coupled with a challenging retail environment, rising costs, and intense competition, Poundworld's financial performance declined, leading to substantial losses. By June 2018, the company fell into administration, a form of bankruptcy protection. Despite efforts to find a buyer, all stores eventually closed by August 2018. In a final twist, founder Chris Edwards later launched a new discount chain called One Below, even taking over some former Poundworld locations.
