About Poparazzi
Poparazzi operated as a photo-sharing social platform with a novel premise: users could not post photos of themselves. Instead, a user's profile was built exclusively from photos taken and tagged by their friends, positioning them as each other's 'paparazzi.' This concept was designed to remove the pressure for perfection often associated with social media.
The company, TTYL Inc., was founded by brothers Alex and Austen Ma. Both founders attended UCLA and had prior experience in finance and technology. Alex Ma, who served as CEO, previously worked in technology M&A at Deutsche Bank and in venture capital at Scale Venture Partners. Austen Ma also had a background in venture capital and technology M&A. Their journey began around 2018, initially with a social audio app called TTYL, before pivoting to Poparazzi after three years of development.
The iOS-only app launched in May 2021 and experienced a meteoric rise, quickly reaching the top of the App Store charts. The core functionality centered on a user's friends capturing and posting images to their profile. Features included a 'Pop Score' and the ability to create stop-motion GIFs. The app disabled the front-facing camera and did not allow for captions, cropping, or filters, reinforcing its focus on candid moments. The business targeted Gen Z users by offering a more authentic, less curated social media experience.
Following its explosive launch, Poparazzi secured significant venture capital. It raised an initial $2 million in seed funding in 2018 from Floodgate for its parent company, TTYL. In June 2022, the company confirmed a $15 million Series A round, bringing total funding to $17 million. At its peak, the company was valued at over $100 million and had amassed over 5 million installations. Despite its initial success, user engagement declined significantly. In April 2023, the founders announced the app would be shut down, with service officially discontinuing on June 30, 2023.
