The company was originally founded as Pond Biofuels in 2008 by Steve Martin, whose background in optics systems was instrumental in developing the ideal light conditions for algae growth. The inspiration came from a 2008 article about algae as a promising alternative to fossil fuels, which led Martin to start cultivating algae in a coffee cup. Initially focused on biofuels, the company pivoted to broader applications for its algae technology, rebranding as Pond Technologies in 2014 to reflect this expanded scope.

The company's business model is centered on a proprietary algae growth platform that utilizes raw, unfiltered CO2 emissions from industrial facilities. This process sequesters nearly two tonnes of CO2 for every tonne of algae produced. Pond's revenue is generated through multiple streams, including the sale and licensing of its proprietary technology, royalties from algae production, engineering and consulting services, and the direct sale of algae-based products. The company operates through three main divisions: Pond Carbon, which focuses on carbon capture projects; Pond Naturals, which manufactures and distributes nutraceuticals and other natural products; and Pond Biotech, which develops high-value proteins for diagnostics and therapeutics. Clients are primarily large industrial emitters in sectors such as cement, steel, and energy, as well as companies in the nutraceutical, animal feed, and biotech industries.

Pond's core offering is a fully contained, sensor-laden photobioreactor system that provides a controlled environment to optimize the growth of various algae strains, operating 24/7 regardless of climate. This system can be installed on-site at industrial plants, offering a smaller physical footprint and reduced contamination risk compared to traditional open-pond methods. The cultivated algae are then processed into a range of commercial products. For the nutraceutical market, this includes high-value ingredients like Astaxanthin, Spirulina, and Chlorella. The Pond Naturals division uses a proprietary chemical-free, water-based extraction process for products like Astaxanthin oleoresin. For industrial clients, the technology provides a pathway to mitigate their carbon footprint while creating a new revenue stream from the resulting biomass, which has applications in animal feeds, biofuels, and bioremediation. A key partnership with Livalta, a subsidiary of Associated British Foods, aims to commercialize algae-based animal feed ingredients derived from CO2 emissions.

Grant Smith, who has over 25 years of experience in the health supplements and CPG sectors, took over as CEO in 2020. His journey with Pond began when his company, RFI Canada, was acquired by Pond in 2018, after which he established the Pond Naturals division. Founder Steve Martin has transitioned to a technical advisor role. The company is publicly traded on the TSX Venture Exchange under the symbol POND.
