About Polyvore

Polyvore was a community-driven social commerce website that enabled users to become creators in the fashion, beauty, and home decor spaces. The platform's core offering was a set of digital tools that allowed users to create shoppable collages or 'sets' by mixing and matching product images from a vast index clipped from various e-commerce sites. This functionality essentially allowed users to act as virtual stylists and tastemakers, sharing their creations with a community that, at its peak, reached 20 million unique monthly visitors.

The company was founded by Pasha Sadri, Jianing Hu, and Guangwei Yuen, a trio of former Yahoo engineers. The idea originated in 2006 from Sadri's personal experience of creating physical mood boards for a home renovation project with his wife; he saw an opportunity to digitize and improve the process. The founding team launched the first version of the website in February 2007. A pivotal figure in Polyvore's journey was Jess Lee, an early user and Google product manager who provided extensive feedback on the site. This led to her joining the team and eventually becoming CEO and an honorary co-founder, instrumental in the platform's growth and mission to democratize fashion.

Polyvore's business model was primarily based on affiliate marketing and advertising. Each item featured in a user-created 'set' linked back to the original retailer's product page. When a user clicked through and made a purchase, Polyvore would earn a commission. This created a powerful revenue stream, leading the company to profitability by 2011. Additionally, the platform offered native advertising solutions for brands, such as sponsored contests and promoted products, allowing retailers to gain insights into how consumers were styling their items. The data generated by user activity was a valuable asset, providing brands with real-time trend intelligence.

The company's trajectory included significant funding rounds from investors like Benchmark Capital and Matrix Partners. In a major milestone, Yahoo acquired Polyvore on July 31, 2015, for an estimated $230 million, aiming to integrate its commerce and community features into Yahoo's digital media properties. Following Yahoo's acquisition by Verizon in 2017, Polyvore became part of the Oath media subsidiary. The platform's journey came to an abrupt end on April 5, 2018, when it was acquired by the luxury e-commerce retailer SSENSE and shut down immediately, with its website redirecting to SSENSE's homepage, a move that caused significant backlash from its loyal user base.
