Plethora operated as a technology-driven contract manufacturing firm, founded in 2013 by Nick Pinkston and Jeremy Herrman in San Francisco. Pinkston, who served as CEO, came from a family involved in the factory industry in Pittsburgh and had previous ventures in the hardware space, including CloudFab and HackPittsburgh. The founders established Plethora to address the inefficiencies and long lead times common in traditional prototyping and short-run production.

The company's core business was providing rapid CNC machining services for custom parts. Plethora developed a proprietary software platform that functioned as an add-in for major CAD software like SolidWorks and Autodesk Inventor. This tool analyzed a user's 3D model in real-time to provide instant feedback on its manufacturability, along with immediate price quotes. This process eliminated the typical back-and-forth negotiation and quoting process with traditional machine shops, significantly shortening the product development cycle. Once a design was submitted and an order placed, the company's system would automatically program the CNC machines in its own factories to produce the parts.

Operating on a vertically integrated model, Plethora managed the entire production process from software analysis to final part manufacturing in-house. This approach allowed them to offer guaranteed turnaround times, sometimes as fast as three days, a notable reduction from the industry standard of several weeks. The firm catered to a wide range of clients, from individual engineers and hardware startups to large Fortune 500 companies, producing low-volume runs of 500 units or fewer. Initially based in San Francisco, the company expanded by opening a second, larger factory in Marietta, Georgia, in 2019 to meet growing demand. Despite raising over $36 million in funding from investors including Google Ventures and Founders Fund, the company eventually ceased operations.
