Developer of mobile games that includes the dash® series of games MoreLess
PlayFirst, Inc. was a casual games publisher founded in 2004 by John Welch, Brad Edelman, and Jason Rubinstein. The company carved a significant niche in the entertainment software industry, particularly with its focus on time-management and strategy games. Its business model centered on the development and multi-platform publishing of downloadable games for PC and Mac, later shifting focus towards the mobile and social gaming markets. Revenue was generated through game sales on its own website and over 500 other sites, as well as through in-app purchases in its later free-to-play mobile titles.
The company's breakthrough came with its first published title, "Diner Dash," initially developed by Gamelab. This game, featuring the entrepreneurial character Flo who quits her corporate job to run a diner, became a massive commercial success and was downloaded over 550 million times. The immense popularity of "Diner Dash" led to the creation of a large and successful franchise, including direct sequels like "Diner Dash 2: Restaurant Rescue" and numerous spin-offs such as "Cooking Dash," "Wedding Dash," and "Hotel Dash." These games were distributed across a wide array of platforms, including PC, Mac, iPhone, iPad, DS, Xbox, and Wii.
Beyond the Dash series, PlayFirst's portfolio included other notable titles developed in collaboration with other studios. This included the "Chocolatier" series, a retro-style strategy game co-created with Big Splash Games, and the "Dream Chronicles" series, an adventure/hidden object game hybrid from KatGames. In 2010, after securing $9.2 million in funding, the company pivoted to concentrate on the burgeoning mobile and social gaming sector. This new direction led to the discontinuation of new PC and Mac game production by 2012. In a move to bolster its mobile capabilities, PlayFirst acquired the IP and key personnel of Big Head Mode in 2013. Ultimately, PlayFirst was acquired by Glu Mobile in May 2014 for approximately $12 million in stock, plus the assumption of debt.
