Playdom
Online social network of game developers
About Playdom
Playdom, Inc. operated as a developer of online social network games, launching on platforms like Facebook, Google+, and Myspace. The company was established in the San Francisco Bay Area in December 2008 by University of California, Berkeley graduates Ling Xiao and Chris Wang, alongside Swarthmore College graduate Dan Yue. Originally founded as YouPlus, the company initially struggled to gain traction with games on Facebook before finding significant success on MySpace with titles such as "Mobsters".
The founders, Chris Wang, Dan Yue, and Ling Xiao, leveraged their backgrounds and a shared interest in online poker, where they accumulated funds to start their business. After a few unsuccessful ventures, including an e-commerce idea and a short-lived social rating app, they pivoted to social gaming just as the Facebook platform was opening up to developers. Chris Wang, who earned a PhD in Computer Science from Carnegie Mellon University, had previously worked at Google. Dan Yue, who served as the founding CEO, brought data-driven insights from his physics degree and experience as the first employee at Adify. This combination of technical expertise and market timing allowed them to capitalize on the burgeoning social gaming market.
Playdom's business model was centered on free-to-play games, generating revenue primarily through the sale of virtual goods and in-game advertising. The company grew rapidly, fueled by a series of strategic acquisitions of other game developers, including Green Patch, Trippert Labs, Three Melons, Merscom, and Acclaim Games. This aggressive expansion strategy helped Playdom become a major player in a market valued at around $300 million in 2009. By July 2010, the company had approximately 42 million monthly active players enjoying popular titles like "Sorority Life," "Social City," "Market Street," and "Gardens of Time".
The company's rapid ascent culminated in its acquisition by The Walt Disney Company in July 2010 for an initial $563 million, with a potential earn-out of an additional $200 million. Following the acquisition, Playdom became a wholly-owned subsidiary of Disney Interactive. However, the integration proved challenging. By 2014, Disney began shutting down many of Playdom's online games, and some titles were sold to other companies like RockYou. On September 1, 2016, Disney announced the closure of the remaining Playdom games, including its flagship "Marvel: Avengers Alliance," effectively shuttering the studio and absorbing it into Disney Interactive.
