Plantix operates a digital ecosystem focused on the agricultural sector, specifically targeting small-scale farmers and agri-input retailers. The company, established in 2015 as PEAT GmbH in Berlin, Germany, was founded by Simone Strey, Robert Strey, Pierre Munzel, Alexander Kennepohl, and others. The founding vision stemmed from the realization by several of the founders, including CEO Simone Strey, a geographer with a background in soil science, that their scientific work had a minimal real-world impact on pressing agricultural issues. This led to the creation of Plantix to provide scalable, technology-driven solutions for farmers. In May 2023, the company was acquired by HELM AG, a German chemicals marketing company.

The core of Plantix's offering is a free mobile application that functions as a crop advisory tool for farmers. By uploading a photo of a sick plant, farmers can use the app's AI-powered image recognition to diagnose pests, diseases, and nutrient deficiencies in seconds. The system can identify over 780 types of crop damage across dozens of major crops. Beyond diagnostics, the app provides treatment suggestions, access to a global community of farmers and agricultural experts, localized weather forecasts, and a library of agricultural knowledge to promote informed decision-making. This platform is designed to help farmers increase yields and reduce crop losses, which are estimated to be between 20% and 40% globally due to pests and diseases.

Plantix generates revenue by integrating the agricultural supply chain. While the diagnostic app for farmers is free, the company monetizes its platform by connecting farmers with local retailers for necessary agri-inputs like pesticides and fertilizers. The business model involves facilitating the sale of these products through its network, from which it earns a margin. To service the other side of the ecosystem, Plantix developed the "Plantix Partner" app. This application assists agri-retailers by optimizing their inventory, providing insights into regional disease outbreaks, and managing orders from farmers, thereby streamlining the supply and demand for agricultural inputs. The company has also expanded into offering credit lines to retailers to facilitate transactions. The vast amount of data collected from millions of users serves as a significant asset, providing real-time insights into the spread of plant diseases and market demand.
