PL BioScience
The platform of tailored cell culture supplements based on human Platelets
About PL BioScience
PL BioScience GmbH operates as a biotechnology firm specializing in cell culture supplements derived from human platelets. Founded in 2015 by Dr. Hatim Hemeda and Christian Wilkes as a spin-off from RWTH Aachen University in Germany, the company aims to provide an animal-free alternative to traditional cell culture media. The founding concept originated in 2013 when Dr. Hemeda, a molecular biologist with extensive experience in stem cell research, observed superior results using a self-produced human platelet concentrate. Recognizing the commercial gap, he partnered with Wilkes, who has a background in business administration and was previously the CEO of Bio-Diagnostix Labor GmbH, to establish the company.
The company's core business revolves around its proprietary ELAREM™ platform, which offers a portfolio of Human Platelet Lysate (HPL) products. These supplements serve as a critical nutrient source for expanding cells in vitro, catering to clients across academic research, pre-clinical development, and clinical-grade cell therapy manufacturing. By utilizing outdated human blood platelets that would otherwise be discarded, PL BioScience provides a sustainable and ethically sourced alternative to Fetal Bovine Serum (FBS), which carries risks of pathogen transmission and faces ethical scrutiny. Revenue is generated through the sale of these HPL products, which include various formulations tailored to specific applications, such as research-grade, GMP-grade, and fibrinogen-depleted versions that simplify lab workflows.
The ELAREM™ technology leverages the high concentration of growth factors in human platelets to promote robust cell proliferation. The products are manufactured in large, pooled batches to ensure minimal lot-to-lot variation and consistency. A key milestone for the company was the launch of ELAREM™ Ultimate-FD PLUS, a gamma-irradiated, GMP-grade HPL produced via a globally patented process, which offers an additional layer of viral inactivation for clinical applications. To meet growing global demand, PL BioScience has expanded its headquarters in Aachen to a new 1,200 m² facility, making it the largest HPL producer globally with an anticipated annual capacity of 20,000 liters of GMP-grade HPL. This expansion supports a dual-source manufacturing strategy to ensure supply chain resilience. The company has successfully raised $13 million over two Series A funding rounds, with the latest in August 2024 securing $8.51 million to expand production capabilities and strengthen its market position.
