Pixie
Augmented reality and mesh network location tracking tags
About Pixie
Pixie Technology developed a "Location of Things" (LoT) platform designed for both consumers and businesses to precisely track physical items. For consumers, the service used physical tags called "Pixie Points" that could be attached to everyday items like keys and wallets. An iOS application then used augmented reality to visually guide the user to the exact location of the misplaced object, showing its position through walls or under furniture. The system operated on a proprietary signaling technology that created a micro-mesh network between the tags, allowing them to communicate their relative positions to each other, similar to GPS principles, with an indoor range of 50 feet and an outdoor range of 150 feet.

The company was co-founded by CEO Amir Bassan-Eskenazi and CTO Ofer Friedman. Bassan-Eskenazi previously co-founded BigBand Networks, taking it public in 2007 and staying through its 2011 acquisition. Friedman holds bachelor's and master's degrees in electrical engineering and worked at Texas Instruments for 13 years before co-founding Pixie. The firm raised a total of $24 million over two funding rounds, including a $5.5 million round in 2013 and an $18.5 million Series B in July 2016, led by Spark Capital with participation from Cedar Fund and OurCrowd. For the business market, Pixie opened its Software Development Kit (SDK), enabling third-party developers and manufacturers to build their own precise, indoor location-based solutions for industries such as logistics, healthcare, and retail. This provided a more affordable and rapidly deployable alternative to traditional Real-Time Location System (RTLS) installations.
