Pirch
Experiential retailer for luxury home appliance brands
About Pirch
Pirch was a retail company specializing in high-end kitchen, bath, and outdoor appliances and fixtures. Founded in 2009 in San Diego, California, by a team including Jeffery Sears, James Stuart, Phil Roxworthy, James Fikes, and Tom Cavallo, the company was born out of the founders' frustration with the uninspiring presentation of home appliances. Pirch developed an experiential retail model that allowed customers to test products in its showrooms, which featured live cooktops, working showers, and in-house chefs and baristas. This try-before-you-buy concept, aimed at providing an immersive shopping environment, set it apart in the retail market.
The company's business model focused on serving homeowners, designers, architects, and custom home builders, providing end-to-end solutions and a curated selection of luxury brands. Pirch gained significant attention, including investments from private equity firm L Catterton in 2013 and recognition from Forbes as one of "America's 100 Most Promising Companies" in 2015. At its peak, the company expanded to ten metropolitan markets across the United States. However, the business faced challenges related to its rapid expansion, high operational costs, and a business model that struggled to effectively target both end-consumers and trade professionals.
In 2017, Pirch began to scale back, closing all stores outside of California to refocus on its home market. Despite efforts to restructure and a change in leadership, the company continued to struggle. In March 2024, Pirch abruptly closed its remaining showrooms, leading to customer and vendor lawsuits. The company filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy liquidation in April 2024, listing assets between $10 million and $50 million against liabilities of $100 million to $500 million, marking the end of its operations.
