Pipedream Labs, an Austin-based hyperlogistics company founded in 2020, is developing an autonomous underground delivery system to address last-mile and middle-mile logistics challenges. The company was co-founded by CEO Garrett McCurrach, CTO Canon Reeves, and COO Drew Bellcock. McCurrach, a mechanical engineer by training, has held a long-standing fascination with logistics, which inspired him to explore solutions for the inefficiencies in last-mile delivery. Pipedream Labs' system utilizes a network of underground pipes, similar to existing utilities like water and electricity, through which autonomous, battery-operated robots travel on rails at speeds up to 60 mph. These robots are designed to carry standard grocery-sized totes, accommodating over 95% of common consumer products. The system consists of three main components: the autonomous robots, the underground network of pipes, and above-ground portals for sending and receiving items. This approach aims to reduce traffic congestion, noise, and vehicle emissions associated with traditional delivery methods.

The company's business model targets several client types, including cities, real estate developers, and merchants like restaurants, grocery stores, and retailers. For commercial clients, Pipedream offers the "Instant Pickup" service. This system allows employees at a business to load a customer's order into a back-of-house storage system, from which it is robotically transported to a customer-facing kiosk in the parking lot in under 15 seconds. The company has already launched a pilot of this system with Wendy's. For municipalities, Pipedream partners to install city-wide networks. A key milestone was the launch of a nearly one-mile-long delivery network in Peachtree Corners, Georgia, connecting a shopping center to a smart city innovation center. This project serves as a proof-of-concept for their larger vision of creating comprehensive urban logistics networks. Revenue is generated through the installation and operation of these systems for jejich respective clients.

Since its founding, Pipedream Labs has secured significant funding to advance its technology and expand operations. The company has raised a total of $24.12 million, including a $13 million round in April 2024 led by Starship Ventures, with participation from Cortado Ventures and Myelin VC. This capital is being used to fulfill over 100 preorders for the Instant Pickup system and to begin construction on a large-scale, middle-mile network in an as-yet-unnamed city. The company's work has been recognized, including a special mention in TIME's Best Inventions of 2023.
