About Piedmont Bancorp

Piedmont Bancorp, Inc., the parent company of The Piedmont Bank, operates as a community-focused financial institution serving businesses and residents, primarily in the metro Atlanta and North Georgia areas. The bank was established in 2006, originally named Republic Bank of Georgia. In 2009, a group of 200 shareholders led by veteran banker Monty Watson recapitalized the financially troubled Republic Bank of Georgia with $24 million, rebranding it as The Piedmont Bank. Watson, a University of Georgia and Duke University alumnus, brought extensive experience from his career at First Gwinnett Bank and Peachtree Bank, both of which he was instrumental in growing before they were sold.

The bank's business model is centered on building personal relationships with its clients, a philosophy it considers a key differentiator from larger competitors. It provides a comprehensive suite of banking services tailored for both personal and business customers. Offerings include personal checking, savings, money market accounts, CDs, IRAs, loans, and mortgages. For its commercial clients, The Piedmont Bank provides business checking and savings, loans, and cash management services. The institution operates through its 16 physical locations, emphasizing direct engagement and personalized service delivery. Technology is viewed as a tool to enhance convenience rather than replace the personal banking relationship.

A significant milestone in the company's history is its recent acquisition by United Bankshares, Inc. (NASDAQ: UBSI). The definitive merger agreement was announced in May 2024 and completed in January 2025, in a transaction valued at approximately $267 million. Following the acquisition, Piedmont Bancorp merged into United Bankshares, and its subsidiary, The Piedmont Bank, merged into United Bank, with the combined entity having over $32 billion in assets. The former Piedmont locations now operate under the United Bankshares brand. Monty Watson continues to lead the Georgia operations as the regional president for United.
