About PicoBrew

PicoBrew was a technology hardware company that developed automated craft beer brewing appliances for home and professional use. It was founded in Seattle in 2010 by brothers Bill and Jim Mitchell, along with Avi Geiger. The founding team combined unique expertise; Bill was a former Microsoft vice president with a background in software and appliance development, his brother Jim was a food chemist and physicist, and Geiger was a hardware engineer also from Microsoft. Their collaboration was driven by a shared frustration with the complexities of traditional homebrewing and a desire to bring more precision and repeatability to the process.

The company's business model revolved around selling high-tech brewing appliances and proprietary, pre-packaged ingredient kits called "PicoPaks." This created a recurring revenue stream, as users of the machines would purchase these kits to brew various beer recipes. PicoBrew formed partnerships with well-known craft breweries like Dogfish Head and Elysian to feature their recipes in the PicoPak marketplace, offering consumers a way to replicate their favorite commercial beers at home. The company gained early traction and significant funding through multiple successful Kickstarter campaigns, which were among the highest-funded in the food category. It also secured a minority stake investment from ZX Ventures, the venture arm of Anheuser-Busch InBev, in 2017.

PicoBrew's product line began with the Zymatic in 2014, a device that automated the all-grain brewing process and was aimed at serious homebrewers and professionals. Subsequent products included the Pico C, a more affordable and user-friendly model for beginners, and the KegSmarts, a smart kegerator system for fermentation, storage, and serving. The company later expanded its portfolio to include the Z Series for professional brewers and even diversified into devices for making cold-brew coffee and distilling spirits. This rapid product expansion, however, is cited as a potential factor in its eventual downfall, as it may have diluted the company's focus and strained resources.

Despite its early promise and having raised over $16 million, PicoBrew faced significant financial challenges. The high price point of the machines (starting around $500), coupled with the cost of ingredients, made the value proposition difficult for many consumers. The company took on bridge financing in 2019 but failed to secure a necessary subsequent funding round. This led to PicoBrew entering court-managed receivership in February 2020. After an auction in April 2020, the company's assets were acquired by its primary creditor, PB Funding Group, and the original founding team was let go. By October 2020, the company officially announced it had closed for business and was seeking new ownership.
