About Photop Technologies
Photop Technologies, established in 2003, operates as a vertically-integrated designer and manufacturer of photonics components. The company was formed through the strategic merger of four specialized Chinese firms: Koncent Communication Inc., Shanghai Uniwave Technologies Co. Ltd., Fujian Sandgy Optronics Inc., and Fuzhou Microlattice Semiconductor Co. Ltd. This consolidation created a comprehensive entity with capabilities spanning fiber optics, lasers, precision optics, and photonic crystal materials. The leadership included Chairman Hongrui Wang, CEO John Ling, and COO Sunny Sun.
The company's business model is centered on providing a broad array of photonic products and integrated manufacturing services. Its offerings include engineered materials, optical components, microchip lasers for display applications, and optical modules for fiber-optic communication networks. The product portfolio is extensive, featuring items such as laser crystals, lenses, mirrors, prisms, and various types of optics. Photop serves a diverse client base across consumer and commercial sectors, positioning itself as a manufacturing base for international companies. Revenue is generated through the sale of these components and by providing contract manufacturing and product outsourcing services.
A significant milestone in the company's history occurred in December 2009, when it was acquired by the US-based company II-VI Incorporated (now Coherent Corp.). The deal was valued at approximately $83 million, consisting of cash and stock, and officially closed in January 2010. Following the acquisition, Photop was integrated with II-VI's VLOC Incorporated subsidiary and Near-Infrared Optics business to enhance expertise in crystal materials and optics and to provide II-VI with greater access to the Chinese market. At the time of the acquisition, Photop had over 3,000 employees, including a significant engineering team based in Fuzhou, Shanghai, and Guangzhou.
