Phonetic Systems
Speech recognition solutions for telecommunications, enterprise and Internet companies
About Phonetic Systems
Phonetic Systems, established in 1999, was a provider of large-scale speech recognition applications for enterprises and service providers. As one of the early portfolio companies of Magma VC, the firm developed a proprietary Voice Search Engine (VSE) built upon patented voice recognition technology. The company's business model centered on selling its software and pre-packaged applications, such as the PhoneticOperator for automated directory assistance, to large corporations. Revenue was generated through direct sales and via value-added resellers, like a 2003 agreement with Gold Europe to target the UK call center market.
The company's core product was its Voice Search Engine (VSE), a standards-based speech recognition solution with an open API that could be integrated into various platforms or function as a standalone application. This technology was designed to power voice-driven solutions, allowing clients to add speech-enabled features to their existing products. A primary application was the Automated Directory Assistance (ADA) system, which found considerable market traction. By 2004, the company had cultivated a substantial client roster of over 130 Fortune 1000 companies, including prominent names like Citigroup, JP Morgan, Intel, and Microsoft.
Phonetic Systems' trajectory culminated in its acquisition by ScanSoft Inc. in February 2005. The transaction was initiated and managed by Phonetic Systems' chairman and CEO, Yahal Zilka. ScanSoft, a major player in the speech technology sector, later merged with Nuance, effectively absorbing Phonetic Systems' technology and market position. Following the acquisition, the Phonetic Systems brand ceased to operate as an independent entity, and its domain is now listed for sale.
