Pharmaca operated as an integrative pharmacy chain, blending traditional pharmacy services with natural and complementary health solutions. The company was founded in June 2000 by Barry Perzow in Boulder, Colorado, with a model inspired by European pharmacies that prioritize natural remedies. Perzow, a veteran of the natural foods industry, sought to apply a similar holistic model to the pharmacy sector, creating a retail environment staffed by licensed health professionals, including naturopathic doctors, herbalists, and estheticians, alongside traditional pharmacists. The business model centered on providing a broad selection of wellness products, such as vitamins, supplements, and natural beauty items, in addition to filling prescriptions. Stores were designed with a 'spa-like' or 'apothecary-type' atmosphere, using sustainable materials to enhance the customer experience. Revenue was generated through the sale of these retail products and from its full-service pharmacy operations. Over the years, Pharmaca expanded its brick-and-mortar presence across several states, including California, Oregon, Washington, and New Mexico, and also developed a robust e-commerce platform. In July 2021, Pharmaca was acquired by Medly Health, a Brooklyn-based digital pharmacy, with the goal of combining Pharmaca's wellness expertise with Medly's technology and delivery platform. However, Medly faced significant financial difficulties, accumulating substantial debt. This led to Medly, along with its Pharmaca subsidiary, filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in December 2022. In February 2023, Walgreens acquired key assets from the bankrupt Medly Health for $19.35 million, including prescription files, pharmacy inventory, and intellectual property. This deal did not include the retail store leases, resulting in the closure of all 22 remaining Pharmaca locations and the shutdown of its e-commerce site by March 31, 2023.
