Peripheral Lab is a technology startup transforming sports broadcasting by converting standard camera feeds into photorealistic, interactive 3D volumetric video. The company was founded in 2024 by Kelvin Cui and Mustafa Khan, former engineering students from the University of Toronto who were part of the university's driverless car team. Their background in autonomous vehicle perception systems and robotics inspired the application of similar technologies to sports production.

The company's core technology utilizes a combination of self-driving car sensors, robotics intelligence, and AI to create realistic 3D replays. This system allows fans to experience the action from multiple perspectives, track individual players, and freeze plays for detailed review. A significant advantage of their platform is its efficiency; it can generate these immersive experiences using just 32 cameras, a substantial reduction from the more than 100 cameras required by legacy volumetric systems. This approach aims to lower costs and simplify operations for broadcasters and sports teams by minimizing the need for bespoke hardware and extensive stadium retrofits. The platform also provides biomechanical data, such as player knee flexion, offering valuable insights for coaches.

Peripheral Lab's business model is centered on multi-year SaaS contracts with sports clubs, leagues, and broadcasters. In December 2025, the Toronto-based startup secured $3.6 million in seed funding in a round led by Khosla Ventures, with participation from Daybreak Capital, Entrepreneurs First, and Transpose Platform. The company, headquartered in Dover, DE, plans to use the capital to expand its engineering team, reduce hardware costs, and forge partnerships with North American leagues.
