Shop now, and pay over time at your favourite stores MoreLess

PayBright, an Affirm company, operates as a prominent Canadian buy-now-pay-later (BNPL) provider for both e-commerce and in-store transactions. The company's business model is centered on partnerships with retailers, allowing consumers to finance purchases through installment plans. Revenue is generated through fees charged to merchant partners and, in some cases, interest fees from consumers on longer payment plans. For merchants, PayBright pays them upfront, assuming the credit and fraud risk, which can lead to increased sales conversion and higher average order values.

The company's history traces back to 2009 when it was founded as Health Smart Financial Services by James Fox and James Hyssen. Initially, the service focused exclusively on providing payment solutions for healthcare-related expenses. A significant transformation began in 2015 when Wayne Pommen joined as President and CEO. With a background in private equity at TorQuest Partners and consulting at Bain & Company, along with a PhD from Cambridge, Pommen steered the company toward the broader retail sector. This strategic pivot led to a full rebranding to PayBright in January 2017, and by November of that year, it launched as the first instant e-commerce financing solution in Canada.

PayBright offers consumers flexible payment options, such as the popular 'Pay in 4' plan, which consists of four interest-free bi-weekly payments for smaller purchases. For larger items, payment terms can extend up to 60 months with interest rates starting from 0%, though they can go higher depending on the consumer's credit profile. The service integrates directly into the checkout process of its partner merchants, providing a seamless experience for shoppers. In December 2020, the U.S.-based BNPL company Affirm announced its acquisition of PayBright for approximately CA$340 million, a deal finalized in January 2021. This merger combined PayBright's extensive Canadian merchant network of over 7,000 retailers with Affirm's established U.S. presence. Following the acquisition, PayBright began its transition to operate under the Affirm brand.
