The story of PathGroup begins in 1965, when two pathologists, Dr. Harry G. Browne and Dr. John B. Thomison, partnered to provide pathology services for a new hospital in Nashville. This physician-led foundation set the tone for the company's future. By 1971, they had formed Associated Pathologists, serving multiple hospitals in the Nashville area. A pivotal moment came in 1996 when, under the leadership of Dr. Ben Davis, the entity known today as PathGroup was officially founded. The company embarked on a growth trajectory, acquiring other physician-owned pathology groups and expanding its services. A key development was the launch of its Clinical Lab in 2003, allowing it to become a comprehensive partner for hospitals needing both pathology and laboratory diagnostics. The company's growth attracted significant outside investment. In 2016, PathGroup announced a major recapitalization in partnership with Pritzker Group Private Capital, a move designed to fund further expansion while allowing the management and pathologists to retain significant ownership. This was followed by another significant event in May 2022, when private equity firm GTCR made a majority investment, again in partnership with Dr. Davis and the management team, to accelerate growth through acquisitions and organic expansion. Today, PathGroup stands as one of the largest private providers of anatomic, clinical, and molecular pathology services in the U.S.
