Pannaway Technologies
Converged-broadband services to telecommunications companies
About Pannaway Technologies
Pannaway Technologies operated as a supplier of Ethernet/IP multi-service access platforms, designing and developing converged IP broadband access systems for telecommunications companies. The company's primary clients were telecom service providers, including rural Incumbent Local Exchange Carriers (ILECs), Independent Local Exchange Carriers (ILECs), and systems integrators in the federal market. Pannaway's business model focused on directly supplying local carriers with the necessary hardware and software to offer triple-play services—voice, video, and data—to their subscribers. This approach allowed telecom providers to migrate from older ATM and TDM networks to more advanced, all-IP solutions.
The company's product portfolio was centered around its Service Convergence Network (SCN), an end-to-end IP Ethernet access solution. Key products included the Broadband Access Manager (BAM), a broadband element management system designed to simplify installation and reduce operational expenses for service providers. The BAM provided features like automated line diagnostics, remote network troubleshooting, and automated provisioning of subscriber services. Other significant offerings were the Broadband Access Switch (BAS), Residential Gateway NIDs (RGN), and Broadband Aggregators (BAR), which managed converged traffic. Pannaway also developed the MAGNM-20, a high-density Multi-Service Access Platform (MSAP) with a pure Ethernet/IP core, capable of supporting various access technologies from legacy T1 and POTS to ADSL2+, GPON, and Active Point-to-Point Ethernet.
Founded as a startup, Pannaway successfully raised significant private funding, totaling over $56.1 million by mid-2005, with notable contributions from investor Bob Levine. A significant milestone was the 2007 acquisition of the Access division from TelStrat International, which expanded Pannaway's customer base to over 300 and added the Inteleflex broadband loop carrier (BLC) platform to its portfolio. In November 2008, Pannaway Technologies announced a definitive agreement to merge with Enablence Technologies Inc., combining its operations with Enablence's FTTx Networks division to enhance its product offerings with Planar Lightwave Circuit (PLC) technology.
