Pani Systems operates as a multifaceted company with distinct focuses on consumer smart water products and industrial water treatment solutions. The consumer-facing side, based in Austin, Texas, was founded by Allen Tsai in 2018. Tsai, an alumnus of UC Berkeley with a background in electrical engineering and over two decades in consumer electronics, was inspired to launch the company after a trip to Nepal where he helped build water wells. This experience highlighted the importance of water and sparked the idea to enhance the daily drinking water experience for consumers.

The company's hallmark consumer product is the Pani Source, a countertop smart water system. This device employs a three-stage filtration process—using activated carbon, ion-exchange, and a sub-micron membrane—to remove contaminants like chlorine, heavy metals, pesticides, and microorganisms. Beyond filtration, the system remineralizes water with calcium and magnesium and allows for personalization through infusion pods. These multi-use pods, designed to be recyclable and compostable, can add flavors, vitamins, or supplements like electrolytes, B12, and melatonin. The business model for the consumer division centers on the sale of the Pani Source device and recurring revenue from the sale of filters and infusion pods, which can be purchased via a subscription service. A separate but related entity, Pani Energy, is a Canadian software-as-a-service (SaaS) company founded in Victoria, British Columbia, in 2017 by CEO Devesh Bharadwaj. Bharadwaj, who grew up in India and has a background in mechanical engineering, was driven to address global water scarcity. Pani Energy targets industrial and municipal water and wastewater treatment facilities, offering a cloud-based AI platform named Zed. This hardware-free solution integrates with a plant's existing sensor data to create digital twin simulations and provide advanced analytics. The platform optimizes plant operations to reduce energy consumption, material costs, and greenhouse gas emissions while increasing water production yield. It offers predictive maintenance insights and helps operators make more efficient decisions through a tiered subscription model.
