About PainCeptor Pharma

PainCeptor Pharma was a Canadian biopharmaceutical company established in March 2004 through the strategic merger of two academic spin-offs, Antalium Inc. from McGill University and NeuroCeptor Inc. from Queens University. The company was founded by Kazimierz Babinski and Philippe Seguela from Antalium, and Gregory Ross and Richard Riopelle from Neuroceptor, with Louis Lamontagne taking the helm as President and CEO. The firm focused on discovering and developing small-molecule drugs for acute and chronic pain by targeting the peripheral nervous system (PNS), a strategy designed to avoid the significant side effects associated with treatments acting on the central nervous system (CNS).

The company's primary business was centered on advancing its pipeline of novel pain therapeutics through preclinical and clinical trials, with the ultimate goal of partnering or licensing these assets to larger pharmaceutical companies. PainCeptor's research targeted specific pain receptors, primarily members of the acid-sensing ion channel (ASIC) family and nerve growth factor (NGF) receptors. Its development pipeline included antagonist programs targeting ASIC1 and NGF/p75, with lead candidates PPC-5650 and PPC-1807, respectively, as well as a third program targeting ASIC3. This focus on peripheral neurons was intended to block the transmission of pain signals at their source.

PainCeptor successfully secured significant venture capital, raising C$23 million in a Series A round upon its formation in 2004 and an additional C$24.4 million in a Series B round in 2007, bringing its total funding to approximately C$47 million. The company established a key collaboration with the Danish firm NeuroSearch to advance its ASIC program. Despite early progress, including the selection of preclinical lead candidates and announcements of patent awards, PainCeptor's drug programs were ultimately discontinued. The small-molecule antagonists program ceased in 2009, and development of PPC-5650 was halted by 2016. Several patent applications were abandoned, and the company is now considered deadpooled.
